Solheim Cup history
The Solheim Cup is the most important competition in women’s golf worldwide, known as the women’s version of the Ryder Cup.
The Solheim Cup is a biennial tournament that pits women’s professional golf teams from Europe and the U.S., with 12 players per team, against each other in a match play format.
The history of the Solheim Cup begins in 1990, the first edition of the tournament was held at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club (Florida, USA), where the American team won by a hefty score of 11 1/2 to 4 1/2 of the European team.
Until 2002 it was played in even-numbered years, alternating with the Ryder Cup. But after the 2001 Ryder Cup calendar was modified following the September 11 attacks in the U.S., the Solheim Cup was moved to odd-numbered years starting in 2003. A further reorganization of team golf events took place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Solheim Cup will return to even-numbered years from 2024.
The Solheim Cup alternates the venue in each edition between the United States and Europe, in the old continent it has been played so far in Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Ireland and Germany.
