Ryder Cup history
The Ryder Cup, one of the most prestigious events in the world of golf, had its beginnings in an unofficial tournament in 1921, won by Great Britain. In 1926, another unofficial tournament was held, also won by the British, and was witnessed by Samuel Ryder, who later proposed the idea of an official tournament between British and American teams. Currently, the Ryder Cup is run by the USPGA and the PGA European Tour.
The first edition was played in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1927, pitting teams from Great Britain and the United States against each other. For more than four decades, the American dominance was overwhelming, but in 1973 players from Ireland joined the British team, and in 1979 other European countries were included thanks to the initiative of Severiano Ballesteros. This inclusion of players made the tournament much more competitive.
The Ryder Cup is held every two years, alternating venues in the United States and Europe. Originally the Ryder Cup was always played in the British Isles when it was held in Europe. In 1997 it was held for the first time outside Great Britain, at the Real Club Valderrama, with Severiano Ballesteros being the great promoter of the Ryder Cup being played in Spain, he had an outstanding participation as captain, and is recognized by experts as one of the best captains in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Since its inception, the Ryder Cup has been held every two years, except during the Second World War (1939 and 1945). The tournament has been postponed twice, after the September 11, 2001 attacks, and the 2020 edition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ryder Cup game format
Teams from Europe and the United States face each other in several match play matches between the twelve players that make up each team. Currently, the tournament consists of eight foursomes matches, eight fourball matches and twelve singles matches, with each match won awarding one point to the winning team, while a tie translates into half a point for each team.
Matches take place over three days, with four fourball and foursomes matches on the first two days, and twelve singles matches on the third day. In the event of a tie, the team that won the previous edition retains the title.
The captains of each team may select the eight players who will compete in each of the four rounds of the first two days. In the foursomes matches, players alternate strokes with the same ball, while in the fourball matches, all four players have their own ball along the course and each hole is won by the team whose player scores the fewest strokes. Individual matches are the standard competition format between two players, where the player who scores the fewest strokes wins the hole.
