Unforgettable experiences in the Race to Dubai
Race to Dubai history
The Race to Dubai, formerly known as the European Tour Order of Merit, is an annual golf competition that has been held since 1971. This exciting title race became the Race to Dubai in 2009, with the aim of further enhancing the prestige and excitement surrounding the event.
Since its inception, the European Tour Order of Merit has been a ranking system that recognizes and rewards the best golfers of the season. Over the years, legendary names such as Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie have featured at the top of the Order of Merit, leaving their mark on the history of European golf.
However, in 2009 it was decided to give the competition a new impetus, and the Race to Dubai was born. The name change reflected the goal of attracting a wider and more global audience, and positioning Dubai as the final and spectacular destination of the European Tour season.
The Race to Dubai retains the essence of its predecessor, allocating points to players based on their performance in European Tour tournaments throughout the year. These points are accumulated in a ranking, and the top players at the end of the season qualify for the culminating event: the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
The DP World Tour Championship, held at the magnificent Jumeirah Golf Estates, is a tournament that brings together the top 60 players ranked in the Race to Dubai. Not only does this event offer an impressive prize purse, but it is also a spectacular stage where golfers battle it out to be crowned the Race to Dubai champion.
Over the years, the Race to Dubai has witnessed epic duels, thrilling moments and outstanding champions. Since the establishment of the new name, renowned golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm have made their mark on the competition, demonstrating their skill and talent with every shot.
